Now's the time everyone is making their New Year's resolutions. Some
of us may want to lose weight, try meditation or wake up earlier. If
you're Mark Zuckerberg, however, you want to code a virtual butler with
artificial intelligence (AI).
On Sunday evening, the Facebook CEO posted that
he had a special goal he wanted to take on in the New Year. "My
personal challenge for 2016 is to build a simple AI to run my home and
help me with my work," he wrote. "You can think of it kind of like
Jarvis in Iron Man."

Rather than build a Jeeves out of steel and spare parts, it seems
Zuckerberg plans to code a virtual system that will use voice controls
and facial recognition, among other capabilities, to help out around the
house.
"I'll teach it to let friends in by looking at their faces when they
ring the doorbell," he explained. "I'll teach it to let me know if
anything is going on in Max's room that I need to check on when I'm not
with her."
Chatting with Facebook users who commented on his post, Zuckerberg
said he hadn't named his AI as yet. He mentioned he'd been impressed
with the Amazon Echo, a smart-home device that allows you to control music using your voice, but said it wasn't perfect.
Zuckerberg also made a subtle dig at Tesla founder Elon Musk who has warned of the potential dangers
of AI. "Some people fear-monger about how AI is a huge danger, but that
seems far-fetched to me and much less likely than disasters due to
widespread disease, violence, etc.," he wrote to one user who asked
whether AI could one day run the world.
Unlike us mere plebeians, Mark Zuckerberg often makes good on his New Year's resolutions. In 2010, he apparently resolved
to become fluent in Mandarin and he has demonstrated his abilities in
that language many times since. In 2015, for example, he gave a 20-minute speech about business in Mandarin at Beijing's Tsinghua University.
In 2017, maybe Zuckerberg will go full Tony Stark and build himself some high-functioning body armour.
